Nebula Not

"Hey, Jonas, can you come look at this?" Laura stared at the data on her computer. It made no sense. She hit the internal page to see if they had been hacked lately.

"What's up?" Jonas wander over to her desk, his manopause belly and scraggly beard proceeding him, but his smile and sharp eyes prevented the redneck assumption.

"I've checked the internal security page and they say we haven't been hacked, but look at this." Laura brought up a picture of NGC 5189. "This was taken with Hubble about three years ago." The image showed what looked like to many viewers a dragon made of stars and gases. Human imagination coudl see things in any image.

"Yep. It's one of my desktop wallpapers," Jonas replied in a soft drawl with hunched shoulders.

"This was taken by Hubble a year go," she pulled it up. "The original nebula is between 1780 to 3000 light years from us, depending on who's measuring."

Jonas just nodded. He never rushed you, listening all the way through before commenting on anything, another reason she like working with him.

"When I was looking at the most recent Hubble the measurements came back as only being a thousand light years away. But here is where it gets… odd." Laura was positive odd wasn't the right word, but she wasn't sure what word covered it.

"This is a picture from James Webb telescope last week, I just got it today." She brought up a bright image, sharper and more vibrant in color. "The measurements say it is only five hundred light years away."

"What?"

"It's moving. Toward us. And if my numbers are correct, it will be here in about six months." Laura paused and bit her lip. "And Jonas, it's moving, the stars in it are shifting position as it gets closer."

Jonas had paled to the point his normal insipid complexion seemed healthy. "Are you telling me a nebula is coming to us?"

"No, the data is. I've got nothing to do with it."

They both stared at the screen.

"Well, shit."

Yet another odd idea. What if a nebula wasn't, we just assume because we don't know what else it could be. I'll see you in two weeks with Greece pics!
