Okay so it's not space.

You know how they always talk about "What did you want to be as a kid?" And then try to convince you that you can still follow your dreams? That only works if you wanted to be something possible. Me? I wanted to work on the Starship Enterprise. Not on the bridge or anything, but one of the scientists (preferably a xeno-sociologist or psychologist) that met with new races and learn about them. I wanted to look out my window and see the galaxies go by. Yes, I know now that it doesn't work like that, but it didn't change the dream. I could have tried for astronaut, but that would have been like being a nursing assistant when I wanted to be a surgeon-more painful that it is worth.

So instead I write about the fantastical worlds that I can't visit. I get to play with magic and science and aliens and ways to live that hopefully make others dream.

That is also why I am so freaking excited that Inherited Luck launches this week. I'm writing book 5 (Drafted Luck) and working on a novella that will go in between. Plus I'm working on getting my books loaded in a way that you should be able to buy them in Barnes and Noble and other stores. But mostly I'm trying to deal with a confusing and stressful life. Hence writing other worlds.

I do love my covers. Last week to order and get it the second it releases. You should all envy Australia, they get it hours before the US.

Here is a free microstory that I hope you enjoy. And don't forget you can read No Luck if you want to find out what happened to Charles and Daniela.

UNEARNED

K'lert darted into his house slamming and bolting the door behind him. The sound of footsteps outside his door made him shrink further back into his sanctuary.

"K'lert I know you're in there. You can't avoid me forever," Clas'a said. If she had been yelling or shouting he would have felt better avoiding her. Instead, as always, her voice was calm reasonable, and unavoidable as the passing of the seasons.

He stepped back even further, the warmth of the tikila lights did nothing to warm his soul. A second round of knocking drove him into the chair in the corner, and he tucked the blanket around him like a shield.

"Are you going to talk to me?" Her voice still reasonable and comforting.

The idea of talking made him nauseous. Why did it have to be her? Of all the unmated Listles in the forest, why her?

"The elders won't be pleased."

No they wouldn't. But he didn't care. He could pack up, flee, move to another forest, never see Clas'a again. Or his parents. Or siblings. Fire take it he didn't want be mated. And he had never wanted to be mated to Clas'a.

The lie he told himself smoldered on his tongue and he sighed. That wasn't true.

With a force of will K'lert got up and unbarred the door. He cracked it open the smallest bit and peered at the hero of he forest.

"I'll never be good enough for you."

Clas'a smiled. "You already are."

I hope you enjoyed that story. I'm going back to writing. Stay well and happy.
