Sharing Our Stories: A Writing Workshop for Caregivers with Laura Davis
Feb 24, 2023 9:31 pm
Hello ,
We are proud to partner with Kensington Senior Living to present a free interactive writing workshop for caregivers with internationally acclaimed writing teacher and best-selling author Laura Davis on Saturday, March 18th from 9:30-11:30 am PDT via Zoom. A complimentary copy of Laura’s award-winning 2021 caregiving memoir The Burning Light of Two Stars: A Mother-Daughter Story will be included.
It’s been well-established that writing and honest sharing are deeply healing practices that relieve anxiety, increase resilience, and promote self-compassion. Sharing caregiving stories with those facing similar challenges diminishes isolation by providing a life-giving community of support.
In this, Kensington’s inaugural workshop, you’ll learn to use words and story to explore the joys, complexities, and challenges of being a caregiver to a loved one with memory loss.
We’ll explore:
- How our relationships with our parents change across the life cycle
- A moment we realized that things had changed
- The ways storytelling evokes emotion, clarity, and insight
- How writing can help us access stories we might not be able to access any other way
- The power of writing in community
You don’t need to consider yourself a writer to attend. A notebook, a pen and your willingness to share are all that is required.
This workshop is ideal for caregivers who:
- are responsible for a parent or spouse who can no longer manage their own care
- are grieving as they watch a loved one lose capacity
- feel isolated and stressed because no one day is ever long enough
- live in the sandwich generation, caught between aging parents and kids at home
- experience self-care as an impossible, elusive dream
- are hungry for community—to meet others who will understand what they’re going through
- struggle with complex family dynamics with siblings or other family members
- long to know if deep healing is still possible between caregivers and the person in care
- would benefit from a time-out and a safe, confidential place to express what’s in their heart and on their mind
