Hello ,

imageWelcome to 2023! Does the new year spark anything in you? Hope? Anticipation? Excitement? Or is January 1st just another day? I like to think of a new calendar year as a clean slate, with all of those days waiting to be filled with something positive, moving, purposeful. What about New Year's Resolutions? Have you made any? I personally resolve to finish the novel I've been working on since 2019, relax more, eat less, and put my retirement plan into action. As for AlzAuthors, we resolve to continue to bring you new quality resources via our blog, bookstore, and podcast, as well as offer at least four virtual panel discussions, and place as many Custom Caregiver Collections across the United States as possible. Please watch for our newsletter each week to stay on top of everything AlzAuthors. Let us know what you think, and, more importantly, what you need for your caregiver journey.

On the Podcast

Welcome back to the podcast! This episode is a duet with two of our authors who happen to be years long friends brought together by their work in dementia care and the arts. Tryn Rose Seley and Mary Crescenzo are award winning authors and master teaching artists who have each worked for decades to empower caregivers and enhance the lives of those living with dementia. In this episode, we discuss the value of the creative arts in dementia care, how caregivers can use these modalities at home, and, for the first time, we have singing on the podcast!

Carolyn Birrell has written a beautiful book about her years of caring for her mom during their dementia journey. She touches on so many concerns caregivers face: taking over your parents' lives when you've been raised to be the obedient daughter; sibling issues; long-distance caregiving; multiple Mom moves; finding support; and, of course, COVID. And so much more. Her honesty in exposing her deep-seated emotions will resonate with caregivers looking for validation as they navigate through their own often undesirable feelings.

A Caregiver Writing Workshop for 2023

imageHere's a writing workshop for caregivers from Annette J. Wick, author of I'll Have Some of Yours and Pauletta Hansel, author of Palindrome, poems about her mother's journey through dementia. Annette and Pauletta lead online creative writing experiences designed to help family caregivers, past or present, explore the gifts and challenges of their lives through poetry, storytelling, and journaling. In this workshop, participants write to reflect on their own journey, and to share as much or as little writing in a supportive and safe circle of other caregivers. No previous writing experience is necessary. A Zoom link will be sent to all registered participants prior to class date. Four sessions throughout 2023. Free.
