Welcome Laura Davis, author of The Burning Light of Two Stars!

Dear AlzAuthor,
We receive many requests from authors seeking to have their book or resource included in AlzAuthors, which is delightful, but also somewhat of a miracle. Back in 2016, when we undertook this project, we wondered if anyone would want to be included at all! This year, to date, we have had more than 50 authors complete the submission request form, and there are more who have approached us via email, social media, or the podcast asking how they can be featured. What this means is there is a wealth of information, guidance, and support from those willing to share their dementia stories. Twenty years ago, this was not the case, and caregivers struggled on their own, feeling alone, starving for advice and instruction on what to do when confronted with a dementia diagnosis. We are so grateful to see the that the stigma surrounding dementia is shifting, and people are willing to share their stories. This is a grassroots effort at change and it is magnificent. Caregivers now have valuable tools at hand, and can put together unique libraries to address their individual needs and concerns. Thank you for sharing your story and letting us be a part of it.

Introducing Our Newest Author: Laura Davis
Laura Davis' relationship with her mother had been embattled for decades, but the 3,000 miles between them made it manageable. When her mother, declining from dementia, decided to move across the country to live near Laura and her family, old hurts rose to the surface, leaving her wondering if she could be the caregiver to a mother who had betrayed her when she needed her most. Her deep dive into her past, especially the painful parts, and her honesty in bringing them to light makes this book breathtaking. Her story balances both the sadness and loss of losing a loved one with the sense of relief and new life that comes once the journey reaches its natural ending.
Laura writes:
Caregiving is exhausting. It’s stressful. It’s hard to watch someone lose their memory. And when we have kids at home, and are in the sandwich generation, we feel squeezed like crazy. That’s how it was for me. My mother had dementia and I had two teenage kids at home. I felt wrung out and exhausted every single day. Was I doing it right? Was it even possible to do it right? I was certain I was failing everyone. And to have something unresolved in my relationship with my mother on top of all of that—made it even harder.

Guest Blogging Opportunity
Are you interested in guest blogging? I was invited to submit a post on a new blog, An Educated Patient (published here.) The blogger, Sue Checchio, experienced the unexpected deaths of her parents due to medical mistakes. Her desire to understand the medical “business” led her to Boston University, where she graduated with an MSc in Health Communication. Sue believes in the importance of education to empower patients and their loved ones. The blog features “patient and caregiver stories to educate, empower, and sometimes, uplift.“ Guest posts are welcome. You can reach out to her here.
