Dear AlzAuthor,

Late last week we sent out an email regarding our new initiative Custom Caregiver Collections. This project has been years in the making, thought to be only a dream, but the stars aligned recently to show us a way to bring your real books to real people in real places.

image

To date, we have been primarily an online only organization, focused on digital books and digital media. The pandemic bolstered this vision as shutdowns all over the world made it difficult for people to access books and other resources. Ebooks were a blessing: easily delivered and inexpensive. But many of us long for real physical books to hold in our hands, to hear the sound of pages turning, to smell that smell particular to books alone. And our authors offer lots of physicals books, in fact, there are over 300 titles in our collection. So, the CCCs were born.

If you missed last week's announcement I urge you to dig through your inbox to find it because it is full of details that might interest you. You will be learning more about this project in the coming months and will see it promoted on our social media. There is nothing for you to do now. We are not looking for donations of books; we want to purchase your books so that you earn a royalty for your work. We are looking for grants to help fund the individual collections for non-profit organizations such as memory cafes and senior centers, and they will be for sale to for-profit organizations such as assisted living facilities and home care agencies.

We thank you for your support of AlzAuthors and for allowing us to include your book in our collection. Marianne

On the Blog: Nancy Poland Shares her Dementia Story in Dancing with Lewy

image

Nancy Poland is a humorous, practical, and thoughtful author, speaker, and trainer, focused on caregiving. As a volunteer educator for the Alzheimer’s Association, she brings her experience as a caregiver for her dad, who had Lewy body dementia. Her book uses his poetry, giving the reader a glimpse into the man he was before Lewy.

Nancy writes:

Authoring this book was at times difficult as it was hard to relive the painful times. I struggled with how much to reveal about our family, and what to keep private. But it was also a revelation. I learned so much about my dad and myself through research and putting our story into writing.

April is National Poetry Month

image

imageAnn Campanella has written two volumes of poetry centered on her caregiving journey. What Flies Away, an award-winning poetry collection, tells the story of her mother's descent into Alzheimer's, her father's sudden death and the miracle of her daughter's birth. These poems, called "astonishingly beautiful," are written with a sense of awe that transforms even the most difficult moments into something precious. The Beach Poems is a collection of poetry inspired by Anne Morrow Lindbergh's Gift from the Sea. After caring for her mother for 14 years, Ann went on a series of retreats at the beach. These retreats inspired memories and nourished her soul, ultimately carrying her through grief to a place of joy. Ann is a member of the AlzAuthors management team and the author of Motherhood Lost and Found.

Show us our books!

image

We'd love to see you reading our books! We're collecting photos of readers with their books from the AlzAuthors collection. Is there a particular book that meant a lot to you on your caregiving journey? One that gave you the insight and support you were craving? One you couldn't live without? Send us a photo of yourself reading it. Be sure we can see the cover. Please don't send us pictures of yourself reading your own book. We are using these photos to help us with grant opportunities. Send your pictures to alzauthors@gmail.com. They will end up on our social media as well. Thank you. (Above: Christy Byrne Yates reads Jean Lee's Alzheimer's Daughter.)
