Tip of the Week
Did you know that the the recruiting process between NCAA DI, NCAA DIII, & USports programs greatly varies? In general, most NCAA DI programs commit their recruits when they are young (around 15-16 years old), whereas NCAA DIII & USports programs commit most of their recruits when they are older (around 19-20 years old). With that being said, if you're an older player (around 18-20 years old), this doesn't mean that you can't get an NCAA DI commitment, it's just less likely. Here's why. Although players can commit to NCAA DI programs at an early age, most won't play there until they are 19-20 years old after having Jr. hockey experience. Therefore, a lot of things can happen between that 3-4 year timespan (a player can get injured, quit hockey, commit somewhere else, etc.), leaving room for older players to get a 'last-minute commitment'. As you can see, there is a chance to get an NCAA DI commitment when you're older, but the odds are definitely lower because there are fewer spots available. As for an NCAA DIII commitment, if you play in a good Jr. A league (Ex: CCHL, OJHL, etc.) and do well in either your 19 or 20 year old year, chances are that you'll end up getting one. As for USports, a large portion of their commits are players who have played at the Major Junior level, and a small portion are players who've had a rather successful career in a good Jr. A league.
