Question of the Week

Q: Here are some statistics about college hockey recruitment that people may not know:

A:

  1. Only about 6% of male high school hockey players in the United States will go on to play NCAA hockey at any level.
  2. NCAA Division I hockey programs are allowed to offer a maximum of 18 full scholarships, but most programs only offer partial scholarships due to budget constraints.
  3. College coaches typically start recruiting players as early as their sophomore year of high school.
  4. In a survey of NCAA Division I men's hockey coaches, it was found that nearly 80% of coaches believe that players who participate in multiple sports during high school are better prepared for college hockey than those who specialize in hockey year-round.
