Here's what's been on my mind this week for the 3 Sunday Musings.
1.You don't work as hard as you think you do
Ouch.
That was my initial reaction. But after taking my ego out of the equation, it was spot on.
I watched a video from a popular entrepreneur on work ethic and some conversations with some guests this week whose interview will go live in a month.
A couple of things that stood out to me were:
- Predictability — This is about showing up no matter what's going on. No matter if it's a breakup with your girlfriend, a family member talks about you, you argue with your wife, you don't feel like doing anything—you still show up. This could be showing up to that training session or showing up to write those 1000 words.
- Consistency — It's the cousin of predictability. This is about being consistent with what you're doing. You keep drinking those green smoothies, being disciplined with your sleep schedule, and daily writing because you know it's going to take you to your desired destination.
- Subscribe to the "now" mentality: You don't make the calls tomorrow, you don't start eating healthy tomorrow—you start now. Do it now, not tomorrow—remember there is no tomorrow (imagine me talking in my Apollo Creed voice)
- To avoid burnout, have your own escape — This could be selfishly rewarding yourself for accomplishing milestones through trips, gadgets, or clothes. Daily, this is exercising, dancing, reading, or maybe a nightly Epsom salt bath.
There were many more, but I promised myself to keep these emails a certain length.
2.The entrepreneur's dilemma
I was having a conversation with a friend about online dating.
I have a tinder account, and I have many matches.
Nevertheless, there's way too much going on for me. There's no way I'm going to meet up with all of these women.
Why?
Time and priorities.
And as we continued to talk, I was reminded of a wildly popular article on Inc about this very topic.
Randi Zuckerberg (sibling of another famous Zuckerberg who owns a fairly popular social platform) shared in a tweet:
Yes, this tweet is quickly closing in on ten years, but I think it's spot-on, especially in the early stages.
As I brought this up to my friend, my three were: building a great company, staying fit, and getting sleep.
His were different.
We're also at different junctures of our life.
I've seen many examples of people who have it all, but I'm fairly positive that they were unbalanced for a great deal of time.
Know your values, your endgame, and what you're willing to pay to get what you want. Even healthy eating comes at a cost.
3.OST, The ABC of Winning
I'm currently reading 'Winners: And How They Succeed by Alastair Campbell.
He was Tony Blair's chief spokesman and strategist who helped guide his party to three successive election victories.
Winning comes down to:
- O is for Objective
- S is for Strategy
- T is for Tactics
And he sums these three up by stating, "If you do not have a clear objective, you have no definition of winning. If you do not have a clear strategy, you have no chance of winning. And if all you have are tactics, you have no right to win."
Many know where they want to get to and what they want to achieve (i.e., the objective).
But not as many know their 'S' and 'T.'
You may have a health goal, but what's the strategy and tactics behind it?.
Have a fantastic Sunday!
-Julian
