Hi,

(Before we get into it, just a reminder that the new Marek Zulawski exhibition is opening soon in Toruń, Poland. Still no English version (booooo!), but here's the Polish press release.)

After a few production delays, the new super fancy Andrzej Żuławski Blu-ray box set from Eureka Entertainment was finally released this week.

To celebrate, I have some copies for you lovely people. Skip to the end for details.

What's in the box?

The new box set has three movies fully remastered: The Devil, On the Silver Globe, and The Third Part of the Night. All three offer viewers differing levels of craziness and inventiveness and are a delight for anybody into film history.

Watch the trailer for the box set here.

There's also a smorgasbord of extras. Here's everything you need to know:

  • Limited Edition Box Set [3000 Copies]
  • Limited Edition Hardbound Slipcase
  • All three films presented in 1080p HD on Blu-ray, using definitive digital restorations from 4K scans
  • Optional English Subtitles for all films, from translations by Daniel Bird and approved by director Andrzej Å»uÅ‚awski before his death in 2016
  • Escape to the Silver Globe (dir. Kuba Mikurda, 2021) – UK debut of the acclaimed documentary on the production history of On the Silver Globe
  • Brand new feature length audio commentary on On the Silver Globe by Daniel Bird
  • Michael Brooke on The Third Part of the Night + The Devil – two brand new interviews with film historian Michael Brooke
  • Lukasz Å»ulawski on The Devil – brand new interview
  • Adam Å»ulawski on Jerzy Å»ulawski – brand new interview
  • Return to the Silver Globe – 2019 footage of cinematographer Andrzej Jaroszewicz revisiting the Polish salt mine used as a filming location for On the Silver Globe
  • The Cinematography of On the Silver Globe – new documentary by Daniel Bird
  • Lunar Futurism – new documentary by Daniel Bird
  • A Limited Edition 60-page collector’s book featuring The Enigmas of Å»ulawski, a new essay by Philip Kemp; Unidentified Film Object, Daniel Bird’s revised and edited notes for a presentation on the production history and restoration of On the Silver Globe; a new essay by Andrew Graves; a transcription from a 1979 samizdat journal criticising the official Polish coverage of On the Silver Globe; and an archival letter written by the crew of On the Silver Globe

A huge number of films produced in Poland before 1989 are bogged down in all sorts of legal issues today because their ownership is often unclear. Too many people need to sign off on the permissions and initially enthusiastic plans for re-releases and screenings often disappear after being drowned in bureaucracy.

Andrzej's films are a great example of this phenomenon, with many movie lovers having been forced to watch his Polish productions on dodgy camcorder-shot VHS because nothing else was available. That's why this box set is such a treat.

Win a copy!

Since I contributed to the extras, the Eureka Entertainment team have given me a few extra copies. Want one?

Even if you don't have a Blu-ray player, even if you hate movies, think of this as an opportunity to do some Christmas present shopping early 😎

I will leave the competition up for the whole of September.

The top three referrers on October 1st will all get a copy of the box set. Honestly, you might win with only a handful of referrals - I've no idea how many people will be interested in doing this. So just give it a go!
