Quarks in Tarn贸w & Dubai - and what is "procrastilearning"?
Aug 04, 2022 7:05 pm
Hi, long time, no email,
I hope you are all well. And that I deleted the right amount of bots from the 19000 "people" that signed up to this newsletter... 馃槄
I've only sent out one email to this mailing list in the last 8 years, but I am going to genuinely up my frequency game. I know that sounds funny but you'd better get ready for a new paradigm. Yes, I just used the word "paradigm". And be ready to get an email from me every week!
Importantly, most of you are here due to the Translating Marek website. I've had to completely renovate the site due to the aforementioned bots. You'll notice the ebook I used to give away for signing up is now no longer available. I will be putting it onto Amazon soon instead, and I'm even going to put a nominal price on it. If you are one of the old-school members and didn't manage to grab your copy, just let me know and I will email it to you.
Polish stuff
First off, our travelling exhibition based on our book Quarks, Elephants & Pierogi goes from strength to strength! It is now on in Tarn贸w in Poland. Yes, Poland, not Switzerland or Japan or the UAE or wherever else we've been. But this is actually the best version of the QEP exhibition so far. Here's a Facebook gallery of photos from when we gave a guided tour in mid-July.
It's still on until September 7th at BWA Tarn贸w. It's a fully-bilingual exhibition and the venue is BEAUTIFUL. If you are anywhere near southern Poland, you should totally take a little trip to Tarn贸w and check it out. It's also near the bizarre tomb of General J贸zef Bem.
If you understand Polish, you can listen to a Radio Krak贸w interview with Magda, Sylwia, Miko艂aj and myself from the QEP team. But if you only do English, I'd recommend the video of Magda and I at EXPO 2020 in Dubai last December where an earlier version of the exhibition had thousands of visitors each day:
In case you're wondering about the book itself, there will be another limited print run this year, but otherwise it still looks like most available copies are being resold at double the price due to low supply and high demand... 馃槴
Happily though, there is now a Japanese version! There are only a couple thousand copies as far as I know, and the only place to buy it online is here.
Not Polish stuff
Elsewhere, I've started a new website! 馃コ
It's an attempt at getting into writing publicly again. I have done it so rarely over the past few years, I am giving myself a well earned kick up the arse so that I find it a normal thing to do again. It's called Procrastilearning.com and it celebrates the tendency for reading or learning about things rather than doing anything related to them, so-called procrastilearning. It's a tendency I certainly have, and I expect many people do too to a certain extent. It only has one post so far:
I'm also working on the logo for it too. This is what I have at the moment, but I'll probably change it:
And finally, to reinforce my plan to publish more things online, I have joined an online course called Ship 30 for 30. It's a brutal writing challenge where all the participants force themselves to write and publish something online every single day for 30 days. It kicks off in mid-August. You probably don't follow me on Twitter, but that is where I will be sharing my writing. I can't guarantee any of it will be any good but check my account out if you are interested.
Music recommendation of the week
This won't make much sense unless you've seen Stranger Things. But if there is ever a ghoul that kills people after putting them in a trance, and the only way to escape being killed is to hear your favourite song, then I feel like I have to publicly state what mine would be.
Millions on social media since the show's fourth season aired on Netflix have done the same. They were inspired to do so by a heartwrenching scene where one of the main characters survives by the skin of her teeth when she hears Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God) during the ghoul's attempt to kill her. If you haven't heard, this is why Bush's song has had such phenomenal chart success recently despite being 37 years old.
So what song should you play me over headphones so that I'm not murdered by a pan-dimensional Freddy Krueger? I couldn't truly pick a favourite ever, but I do love Racing Green by High Contrast. Since I first heard it around 20 years ago, it always manages to fill me with joy and energy, and I can't think of any other song that does that so effectively. I would assume I'd need that sort of vibe if I'm going to be running through a hellscape for my very soul.
That's it for this week. I will be playing with the format of this newsletter from week to week, I may even split it into two different ones, so if you have any feedback, just reply to this email.
Wishing you everything fantastic in life and more.
Adam
