This scene takes place after Zoe has arrived in Cosy Cove and has just found out that her handsome but grumpy neighbour, who she met briefly before, is her brother's best friend, Sam.
Lost in thought, Zoe didn’t notice the tall figure rounding the corner until it was too late. With a startled ‘oof’, she collided with a solid chest, stumbling back a step.
‘I’m so sorry, I wasn’t looking where I was—’ The words died on her lips as she gazed into a pair of vivid blue eyes. ‘Oh. Hello again.’
The guy stared down at her, his expression unreadable.
So this is Sam, my brother’s best friend.
Next to him stood a girl of about nine or ten with the same dark hair and blue eyes, wearing a pretty party dress and clutching a colourful gift bag.
‘Fancy bumping into you here,’ he said, his voice gruff.
Zoe couldn’t tell if he was making a joke or annoyed at her. She decided to err on the side of caution. ‘I really am sorry. I got a bit distracted.’
‘It happens.’
The girl jerked his hand, her eyes pleading as she looked up at him. ‘Da-ad!’
He cleared his throat. ‘Yes, right… sorry. I should introduce myself since we’re going to be neighbours. Temporarily, at least. I’m Sam Powell.’
Zoe did her best not to frown. She could be mistaken, but did he purposely emphasise the word temporarily? It was almost like he wanted to make a point she wouldn’t be here for long.
‘Hi, Sam…’ She hesitated, in two minds whether to mention she knew he was a friend of her brother’s.
An awkward silence stretched between them, broken only by his daughter’s star-struck stare. Zoe smiled at her. ‘And who might this pretty young lady be?’
The girl ducked her head, pressing closer to Sam’s side, but there was a sparkle of interest in her eyes.
‘This is my daughter, Ava,’ Sam said, placing a hand on the girl’s shoulder. ‘We were just on our way home from a birthday party.’
‘A birthday party?’ Her smile widened. ‘Well, you look beautiful in your party dress, Ava. I bet you were the belle of the ball.’
Ava giggled, her shyness melting away. ‘I got to wear my new sparkly shoes,’ she said, sticking out one foot to show off a glittery pink ballet flat.
‘Oooh, very fancy.’ She tapped her chin. ‘You know, I think I might need to get a pair of those myself. For all the parties I have to go to.’
Ava’s eyes widened.
She continued. ‘But I bet none of them are as fun as a birthday party with sparkly shoes.’
Sam coughed, and a flicker of something glinted in his eyes. Amusement? Disapproval? Again, she couldn’t quite tell.
‘Well, we should be getting home,’ he said, taking Ava’s hand. ‘It was nice seeing you again.’
His tone suggested otherwise.
‘Yes, of course. I won’t keep you.’
Zoe watched as they walked away, an odd sense of frustration settling over her. She’d hoped to have a proper conversation with Sam, to break through that icy exterior of his. But it seemed he was determined to keep her at arm’s length.
