Hey
I always have conversations with clients about cholesterol because it causes them much panic when it comes back elevated on a test.
Now, there are ,many factors first to be looked into for a numerous lipid panel markers, but the most demonised one is LDL cholesterol
In the last few years, I’ve reviewed numerous studies on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and its impact on mortality in the elderly. Here are the misconceptions that might be cloud your understanding of LDL-C as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Why should you care?
👉 The relationship between LDL-C and mortality is complex. Many assume that high LDL-C levels are inherently harmful, but this view is increasingly challenged by recent research.
👉 Many studies indicate an inverse association between LDL-C and all-cause mortality in older adults. In fact, 92% of cohorts in one review showed this trend.
👉 Understanding LDL-C's role can lead to better clinical decisions regarding cholesterol management in the elderly, potentially changing treatment guidelines.
Here are the top 5 misconceptions you might have:
🙅♂️ High LDL-C is always a risk factor for CVD.
The evidence suggests that high LDL-C may not be a significant risk factor for mortality in older adults. Some studies show that individuals with high LDL-C live as long or longer than those with low levels.
🙅♂️ All studies represent the general population.
Many studies exclude individuals with terminal illnesses or other significant health conditions, which can skew the results. It’s essential to consider the population being studied.
🙅♂️ LDL-C levels are the only factor to consider.
Over 50 different risk factors were adjusted for in various studies. LDL-C does not operate in isolation, and its relationship with mortality is influenced by numerous health conditions.
🙅♂️ High cholesterol leads to higher cancer risk.
Some research indicates that high cholesterol levels may actually be protective against certain cancers, contradicts the notion that lowering cholesterol is always beneficial.
🙅♂️ Current guidelines are definitive.
Given the emerging evidence, there is a strong rationale for re-evaluating guidelines that recommend aggressive LDL-C reduction in older adults.
Instead of one piece of the puzzle, the whole picture matters more
