Brave Reflections: Why Knowing Yourself Matters More Than Ever

Hello , my fellow brave human

I’ve had writer’s block.

And it’s been bugging me. It’s not because I’ve not had anything to say - but because there is so much swirling around that I’ve needed to make sense of it all.

And if feels good to be writing again, and pressing send.

A couple of weeks ago David and I went to the Palestine Action protest. Despite Police Scotland’s warnings of 14-year prison sentences, over a thousand of us showed up over the inaction of the government on Gaza, the nonsensical piece of legislation about characterising Palestine Action as a terror organisation and the crackdown on octogenarian quakers and vicars. Or at least that’s why I was there.

But hats off to Police Scotland, despite a heavy presence they only arrested 3 people vs the nearly 900 in London on the same day. So, it’s nice to be writing this from my studio rather than a cell.

However, the events since have been particularly tumultuous and the rhetoric has turned to violence, an assassination. Celebration, damnation. Lots of voices, getting louder and louder. And some people are becoming more vocal. Performative.

The Real Threat We’re Facing

Here’s what has struck me: when we don’t truly know ourselves, we become vulnerable to performers masquerading as leaders. These people thrive on creating dissonance, disruption and chaos (ultimately for their own wealth and power). They offer easy targets for our grief, trauma and discomfort – but following them only leads us further from our own truth.

The Antidote: Know Thyself

The solution isn’t to point fingers or shout louder. It’s to get so grounded in who we are that we can listen to our inner wisdom rather than perform or parrot others’ words. And to be the calm in the chaos.

That’s why I’ve been creating something to help us stay balanced and connected to ourselves during these mad times.

It’s a tool I call the Brave Foundations Check-in - looking at the importance of creativity, giving/receiving, being, physical vitality, emotional resilience and visibility. How to be in balance with each of these to keep, so we don’t leak all of our energy.

These are the foundations that help us be brave without falling into paralysis or recklessness.

When we truly know ourselves and connect authentically with each other, we don’t need to point the finger of blame on others for our own misfortunes. The more we can just be, and in balance, the safer others can feel around us. The more we can show up and speak up for those who can’t.

Those of us who want to be a lighthouse in this mad time are going to need every bit of brave we can get.

So, it’s time to get back in the writing saddle, be both creative and visible again.

In the meantime, do have a look at the Brave Foundations Check-in, and see if you find it useful. Let me know what you think,

P.S. If this resonates and you’re feeling called to explore what your own “lighthouse” contribution might look like, let’s talk. The world needs more people willing to know themselves deeply and act their brave.
