Just in case you forget, your boss is in charge of your appraisal (though 99% of the result you generate depends on you). Learn his or her dislikes. Though I am yet to find a boss who does not like a staff who delivers great result
Ask your boss for advice on how to get things done efficently, learn how he or she got to this position - I mean in a very sweet and interested way. People like to talk about their own success (You can learn a thing or two from them).
Know how your boss is measured, what are the key metrics that he or she is measured by and help your boss in anyway you can to help achieve it, they will love you for it.
If you see or hear anything that can make them succeed or fail, please share it with them promptly. You are actually helping yourself , when your boss gets promoted, they will remember your good deeds, if they leave the organisation, they will take you along to the new place. Help your boss look good, in turn your boss will make you look good.
If you have a bad boss learn to work with them; they are never in that position forever except they just dont want to grow. And if your boss refuse to grow, then outgrow them - Leave to another organisation.
