At 85,000 words, Lucky Puck is 13% longer than I'd planned, but that's a good thing if you're into the story world.

Have you ever read a story that you didn't want to end? Or wished it was longer or wanted more of these characters?

I have. So my theory is it's better to longer than shorter. You can always skim if you think it's too long, but you can't make up new words to extend the story, right?

Alright, I suppose you could--that's what they call fan-pic, right?

But don't worry, I won't make you work that hard, or I'll try not to make you leave wanting more.

That's one of the reasons I always write epilogues. I'm in love with them as a reader.

So even though when a story is over as a writer, I want nothing more than to write The End and mean it, I take a breath and write that extra something that gives you a glimpse into the extended story world.

At SQ's House

This week I took a road trip to visit one of my college cheerleading friends who is going through chemo treatment. She looked wonderful and has a very positive outlook because what she has is treatable.

Also she has the support of a loving family and a close group of friends of which I am a member. ➜➜➜➜➜➜➜➜

I needed to see her, needed to hug her and it was a great relief to do that, to bring treats and talk and look forward and make plans for next year.

We're all lucky that she can realistically plan for next year.

So in the spirit of life is short, we will do that group trip we've always talked about and I'm going to do my part to make it happen.

Disney World here we come next October! I should mention that Disney is her favorite place to travel.

I've realized that my favorite place is wherever my people are, family and friends, and that's the theme that will guide my decisions for how I live the rest of my life. 💜

Sabien takes the seat next to me on the plane, displacing Ax. After we take off, he answers my unasked question about why he shoved Ax aside.

“Will Brooks be coming down to the game in Boston?”

I keep the sigh to myself. “No.”

I never asked her, but I know she won’t. Not now. Two days ago I would have said hell yeah. I would have rented a luxury suite overlooking Boston Harbor and had her wait for me in bed so I could walk into the room after the game and find her there, a gorgeous, sexy, warm woman who stops my breath when I look at her.  That scene is one of my favorite fantasies and now it won’t work unless she’s the woman in it.

I push the seat back and glance out the window. There’s nothing to see but clouds.

I’m not sure why I’ve never arranged that fantasy before. Guess I never had a woman I looked forward to sleeping with this much. A pain shoots through my gut and I close my eyes again.

“Why not?” Sabien presses.

“Grilling me about Brooks isn’t a good idea right now.”

“Everything okay?”

My only response is a grunt.

Which he interprets correctly and says, “Something’s wrong.”

“Congratulations Inspector Gadget. If you insist, I'll spell it out for you. I don’t have what Brooks is looking for.”

“What the hell would that be? You have money, looks, charm—”

“I’m not capable of the kind of romantic relationship she’s looking for.”

He laughs. “Who says?”

“Fuck you.”

“I’m serious.”

“When have I ever had a romantic relationship? Never. I don’t do romantic relationships. All I have are three categories of relationships with women: family—which doesn’t count—friends and lovers. Brooks wants neither of those.”

“What do you want?”

I snort. “Are you serious? I’d be her lover all day long until she kicks me to the curb.”

He smirks. “Sounds a lot like a romance to me." He waits until I frown at him and says. "I thought you were the one who always kicks your lovers out of bed? And usually before morning.”

“This isn’t the same as that.” I sound far from convincing or even rational. He’s right. What’s going on with me and Brooks isn’t the same as any female relationship I've ever had and that fact makes me more than uncomfortable. I don't actually know what the fuck is going on with me and Brooks.

“Nothing about this is right.” That’s the only thing I’m sure of.

“You sure about that?”
