Out of office message

Folks,

This week is my first session (I nearly wrote "week"I hope I'm not in there for weeks!) in the recording studio.

Best get the out-of-office message on!

My voice coach tells me he couldn't write a book. I tell him I'm not sure I can record an audio file for mine. "It's easy," I tell him—"Start by writing a blog, even one line a day." He smiles. "Speaking comes naturally—just sound like yourself."

One of the most brilliant pieces of design I've come across is the Ignite speaker events: "Enlighten us, but make it quick."

It's scaffolded learning at its best. No more:

How long should I talk for? 5 minutes is all you get.

How many slides should I use? The slides change every 15 seconds. That's it. The decision is made for you.

What if my talk sucks? By the time you have realised that you are dying on your arse, you are walking off stage. From here, it will get easier.

Take every reason why not, and design something that either takes the problem away or minimises it, making the first step easy to take.

Like bumpers on a 10-pin bowling alley—in time, you can do without them, but for now, you need them to make it work.

One small step at a time.

Simon
