Fuck ice, but check out this icicle in my backyard! I experienced my first freeze, and I felt like a kid discovering new environments. ❄️ The cold hit different! The icicles showed up quietly, turning an extreme chill into something unexpectedly beautiful.

OPTIMISM: 💖

A gentle reminder that staying young at heart is about never giving up on what inspires us.

"It is not true that people stop pursuing dreams because they grow old, they grow old because they stop pursuing dreams."

Gabriel García Márquez (Nobel Prize-winning writer)

COOL FIND: 🕵🏽‍♂️

Talking to kids about the current political climate—and immigration raids—can feel heavy, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. This IG reel features a San Diego–based author among others children’s books about protest, activism, and advocacy that help spark age-appropriate, honest conversations rooted in empathy and empowerment. A gentle reminder: it’s okay to name what’s happening and offer kids language for hope, care, and community. 👉 Watch the reel on IG

HOMEWORK: 📝

Create a Gentle Conversation: This week, check in with someone you care about; kid, teen, friend, or even yourself. Name that the news feels heavy, then ask one simple question: “How are you holding up?” You don’t need answers or solutions—just presence. Care, empathy, and listening are how we get through this together. 💛

OTHER STUFF: 📢

imageA proud, full-heart moment: my high school classmate, María Dolores Águila, is absolutely killing it. Her new book, A Sea of Lemon Trees, has racked up major accolades—John Newbery Honor, Pura Belpré Author Honor, National Book Award Longlist, and more—and every one is deserved. Beyond the awards, María is using this moment to call attention to our Latine and immigrant communities under threat, urging us to show up however we can: support street vendors, mutual aid, and each other. Talent, corazón, and purpose—all in one place. 👉Give her a follow.

As January winds down, here’s to staying curious, open-hearted, and rooted in community—whether you're making space for tough conversations or cheering on someone else's big win. Keep showing up.
