When a worksheet needs a plot twist

Twenty problems, one mystery, and no disconnected worksheet questions.

Hi there,

Sometimes students need straightforward practice.

Unfortunately, "straightforward practice" can quickly become twenty unrelated questions followed by twenty increasingly dramatic sighs.

That's why I've been creating mini mysteries: students still solve the math problems, but every correct answer helps them uncover what happened.

My new Order of Operations Word Problems Mini Mystery includes 20 printable problems built around a missing fundraiser envelope.

Students practice the math, examine the clues, and use their answers to solve the mystery.

It works well for:

✔ independent practice
✔ review stations
✔ partner work
✔ an easy sub plan

Everything is printable, and the answer key is included.

It's a small activity, but it gives students a reason to keep working beyond "because question 17 exists."

P.S. If you have a colleague who could use a ready-to-go math activity right now, feel free to forward this to them.
