Booty Call? No! Booky Call

Hey

This email is no tricks, all treats - at least I hope you think so. Halloween is just around the corner.

Halloween is my favorite holidays, because of the candy of course, but also because it scares up the best memories for me: of costumes, of frightening ghosts and graveyards, trick or treating with my friends until our arms about fell off—when we would run home, dump our booty and head out for more, the memory of leaves crunching under our feet and of the smell of autumn in the air.

Strangely, Halloween conjures memories of romance too! Did I mention that I found love at a Halloween party, once? But that will wait for another novel.

I was thinking about candy today—okay, I admit it. I think about candy every day. But today, shopping for goodies in the store to tempt the tastebuds of the few children where I live made me think about Chunky. I never see these squares of chocolate, raisins and nuts anymore, but they used to be my go-to candy. They were my favorites—appropriately named since they contributed to my current state of constant-dieting. These days I settle for Twix, but it’s not the same.

Do you have a favorite memory of Halloween?

In other scary news…

Meanwhile things are very active in the world of the Crazy Eights. I have been changing character names and book titles, and the Double Dare Series, is perhaps finally going to be The Crazy Eights series after all.

All revisions are complete for Eliana’s story – except now she is named Sofia. Two other books are in revision and I have set a goal to get both to editing before year end. I am revisiting my editor Stacy’s time management course and her editing course too. I am still trying to find a way to do fewer and faster revisions. No luck yet but I keep trying.

Just to add some pressure, November is National Novel Writing Month and I have signed up to write 50K words (a new novel) within the thirty names of November. Extra challenging this year since I am off to North Carolina for two weeks to visit my wonderful friends – the women who inspired the Crazy Eights.

Can I cram all this into the next two months? Maybe if I finally finish Stacy’s time management course…

To be honest, I can’t say I love this yet, because I just discovered it myself. But I do love the idea of it.

There is a new smart phone app BOOKY CALL that looks promising to me.

This is straight from a post by book marketing guru Sandra Beckwith.

"A new smartphone app that recommends books based on reader preferences offers both book publishers and self-published authors an innovative way to reach their target audience — and sell them books.

The Booky Call smartphone app, available for both iOS and Android users, mimics the look, feel, and function of a dating app, with users swiping right or left to indicate interest."

The app is free to sign up and already contains over 5000 titles. You provide some information—such as your preference for fiction or non-fiction—and it provides recommendations including a description that isn't simply lifted from the back cover of the book.

I plan to check it out, as an author and a reader. A new way to connect books with readers can't be a bad thing, right?

Read the full description on Sandra's blog.

Happy trick or treating, and happy reading,
