Bingeing again
Hey ,
Please Indulge me for a moment, while I wish my sister a happy birthday!! I will celebrate with her tomorrow, but she will read this today and know I was thinking of her.
When we were kids, we would celebrate her big day with cinnamon ice cream over warmed apple pie. The memory of those birthdays is so powerful. Isn’t it funny the things that stay with us over the years?
I read something this week that fueled my imagination. Someone was teaching a course to authors on writing a romance novel in two weeks. The hook promised that you would be able to publish a book every two weeks, and make a ton of money, of course.
Then came the fine print. Turns out each book would be only 5-10,000 words, not a novel at all, barely a short story. Then it went on to say that you would have a first draft at the end of two weeks. Trust me, no reader wants to read an author’s first draft!
But the idea of getting short fiction into your hands sooner caught my attention and lit something in me. If you have been with me since year two of my authoring journey, you may recall that I serialized my novel “Broken Time” and published it on my blog, weekly over two months. I remember enjoying the feel of producing and publishing sooner than it takes for me to complete my usual novels, which run 75-100,000 words.
That got me thinking. Would you be interested in seeing a few shorter romances each year, maybe two or three between major releases? Or maybe I could do something serial, like Hannah Ford did with her What He Wants series, only I promise to keep it well under twenty-six books! She basically took one story and divided it into a series of short stories so that she could release it as she wrote it. I have a few stories in mind for something like that.
Of course, you might worry that it will only slow down the release of my All’s Crazy in Love series, and to be honest I worry about that too. But sometimes short fiction revs me up, so I think it might be worth a try.
Hit reply and let me know if these would be stories you wanted to read.
Collections Anthologies and Boxed Sets contains dozens of boxed sets priced right. Shifter romances. Billionaire Romances. Military romances. Take your pick. Download a few and you’ll have enough to read for the rest of the year! Running through June 30th.
Last week I had the pleasure of hosting Kris Jayne on the blog. She is a favorite of mine, writing really steamy, inventive stories and doing it very well. Right now she is talking about her latest, fiction based on a story she’d heard growing up in Texas. This one is sure to grab you, it’s a real life spin on an actual oil patriarch who had two families. She describes it as soap opera drama—with hot sex. Who can resist? Find out more about Morning Star here.
With Tall Dark and Rich available for preorder now, and me scrambling to put the polish on my contribution, A Crazy Rich Dilemma, I have been thinking about anthologies a lot lately. I love to read them and wish I could participate in them more often. Sometimes the timing is off, sometimes I simply miss my opportunity, but this week I explain why collections are so beneficial for readers and authors alike. Read more here.
Streaming services have become the best and worst thing in my life. Last week it was a free week on Starz and a chance to catch up on Outlander. Two seasons binged in a seven days. This week I have discovered The Dropout on Hulu, eight episodes about the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos. I am only halfway through the series it is already a powerful reminder that fact is stranger than fiction, and that ideas for stories are everywhere.
Happy reading,
P.S. If you are an author or know one you want to learn more about on my blog, share this link and encourage them to sign up and promote their romance. I. have plenty of available spots for guests this summer. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/409044dabad2baaf49-maddys#/
