It is always a pleasure hearing of the good news from our members: the birth of the new grandchild, the once-in-a-lifetime vacation, the joys of spending time with family and friends.

I've also been moved upon hearing about life's challenges: an emergency trip to the hospital, marital strife, the death of a loved one, even just just the particular brand of self-doubt that we bridge players seem to sometimes cultivate.

Thinking of all the highs and lows life throws at us, I am reminded all of us here are united simply by the enjoyment of... a game! How trivial! How simple! How... profound? That, here we are - grown women and men who have all ridden life's rollercoaster up, down, and around a scary bend or two - still drawn to the conundrums a few cards passed around the table can bring us.

Life's big troubles can wait! For a few hours each week (or day), we cherish our chance to simply learn and play. I hope our virtual classroom - like the bridge table - can be both a joy and an escape.

Through all our ups and downs - at the bridge table and in life - let's keep enjoying this wonderful game together.
