Understanding 2-over-1 and the BBO robots & this week's supervised play session with India

Hi ,

Over the last couple years, many (most?) of us have ended up playing more online. The convenience of being able to play a few hands whenever and wherever we like (my favorite spot is with a cup of coffee next to a nearby lake), but playing with robots can be confounding! As the BBO robots use a GIB 2-over-1 bidding system, and many of us learners find ourselves confused about what certain bids mean.

India is here to help! Announcing four new live lessons beginning March 16th to help us better understand and enjoy playing with the robots on BBO. These lessons will also be a nice introduction to the increasingly popular 2-over-1 bidding system. Even if you don't use this system yourself, you might likely play against others (human and non-human) who do, so it's good to understand.

These lessons are suitable for both Acol & Standard players. Read more below:

Can’t join us live? No problem – a recorded replay will be made available to all students.

Included lessons:

  1. March 16 – What does that mean?
  2. March 23 – 2-over-1s and Wide-ranging NT
  3. April 6 – Bidding with Support
  4. April 13 – Competitive Bidding

In this four-week course, India Natt Leeming will provide an introduction to playing with or against the BBO robots, known as “GiB” (Ginsberg’s Intelligent Bridge Player). GiB has begun to be used widely since the pandemic started; it may even be found playing in your local club duplicates and national bridge federations. Many people have also taken to playing solo with and against three GiBs when practising but one thing that may cause problems here is that GiB can only play 2/1.

This course is suitable for players of any system, whether you already tend to play 2/1 and would like to understand GiB’s particular style, or whether you play Acol and have never even encountered a strong-and-five system before. I shall be demystifying weird robot-y explanations, providing a grounding in how the system is structured and identifying the conventions you will need to watch out for. By the end of this course, you will feel much more comfortable when you are playing with and against GiB: another tool to help you practise your bridge!

Replays will remain available to all registered students for at least one year.
