How would you score your ‘Say/Do GAP?’
Jun 26, 2021 2:01 pm
What is the say-do gap? It’s the space between what an athlete says they will do and the actual REAL-LIFE outcome!
I often refer to success as NOT being defined by finishing time or overall placing, but by what an athlete did in relation to approach, application and consistency.
By working with athletes across many countries, I have gained exposure to a wide variety of cultures, values, and belief systems. HOWEVER, there are common threads that join ALL.
Here is my summary of my top 3 areas of what elevates individuals from the pack!
HAVE YOU GOT ANY OF THESE TRAITS?
Resilience
Resilience is present in athletes who can turn adverse circumstances (both physical and psychological) to their favour quickly through coping mechanisms and a well-established process. Sure, genes play a role in how we deal with stress and trauma, but it is clear the most resilient athletes have tasted ‘rock bottom’ at times, yet continually find a way to right the ship. This includes a wide variety of circumstances, like how an athlete deals with sickness, injury, events getting cancelled, the crappy boss or day work, and family stress.
All have solutions and the athlete who sees this makes great long-term progress.

Consistency
There are several ways athletes can establish consistency in their training and behaviours.
Consistency underpins the success and failure of any training period.
No matter how unpredictable any person’s schedule may be, we are all creatures of habit. I see time after time that there will be a way to establish a level of frequency, and that is consistency in its most basic form.
Frequency is followed by duration. How close can the athlete start to move towards the optimal duration of the desired session? Intensity is the last piece of the “consistency” puzzle.
I see successful athletes challenge themselves continually in terms of their IF (intensity factor) scores after sessions.
When the athlete sees that consistency is the sum of frequency, intensity and duration then they are on the path to greatness.
Is this you?
Brutal
Successful athletes have a brutality about them. Being a Scotsman, I often refer to it as their ‘warrior spirit’. They have a drive and burning desire that will not let anything stand in their way. These athletes almost welcome adversity because they know it will make them stronger, and they thrive on training in a masochistic way.
I hate to say it, but many athletes who believe they possess this trait, do not.
Brutal athletes have no idea, and that is the true beauty of it. It is a power trait that 30 years of coaching has seen me develop a 6th sense for!
