How to Train and Progress with No Metrics

Hi ,


Training methods and structures continue to progress! I will not argue against that fact. We have made huge advances in sports science since my first lecture in the late 1980’s. The way we prescribe, monitor, assess and review training is developing all the time. However, cyclists still have cardio vascular systems, muscles, lungs…… and bikes still have round wheels and a chain!


My point is that it is extremely easy for us to get lost in the progress and feel that if you don’t have the latest gadget, device, aero socks…… or go faster stripes on your helmet (for reference that is made up and please don’t punch into your search engine...they only make you quicker if they are red!)


Training Metrics are included in this new age language that cyclists use as they bond together in group rides post COVID hibernation. FTP, power curve, anaerobic capacity, VO2 max…. The list goes on and on (as you well know!)


The beauty of training metrics is accurate measurement of your present fitness condition which can really help all levels of rider as they forge forward with their fitness journey.


HOWEVER, even as a coach I always like to remind riders that your bodies adaptation to workouts is still the same as it was for that 19 year lad (aka me) in his first lab test in the 1989! OUR knowledge of how to improve the stimulus and improve the adaptation is what is different.


So, what is your point coach?


IF we have better knowledge then why is it that even with accurate metrics do lots of riders FAIL to make the progress they should?


SIMPLE.


They look at the metrics but don’t listen to them! They fail to respond to them in the way that they should. They fail to appreciate that you have one immune system and it’s under attack daily. These attacks are sending you messages BUT most riders ignore them or fail to respond to them in the way that is really needed in order to make meaningful progress. This is usually because they are responding to metrics that don’t tell them the FULL picture.
