August Newsletter
Aug 06, 2025 10:19 pm
Hello , I’m Kerry—founder of Divine Design Cakes by Kerry and the creative heart behind Bake & Bloom! I’m a self-taught baker with over 12 years of experience in cake and cookie decorating. My journey into the world of sugar art began by total fluke—I made a cake with fondant details for a friend, and from that one cake, a true passion was born. Over the years, I’ve poured my heart into creating elegant, one-of-a-kind designs, and now I’m branching out to share what I’ve learned through teaching and decorating education. Whether you’re here for inspiration, treats, or tips, I’m so glad you’re part of this sweet journey with me
Our August Newsletter theme was inspired by “A Summer Garden Party”
Our cake, cookies and cupcakes celebrate everything delicate and dreamy about July—lush florals, colourful palettes, and the joy of gathering outdoors. Inspired by blooming gardens and summertime sweetness, this collection features buttercream-painted cakes, floral cupcakes, and hand-decorated cookies perfect for picnics, tea parties, or simply treating yourself.
Step-by-Step: Palette Knife Buttercream Painting: Turn your cake into edible art using this simple, elegant technique
What You Need:
- A chilled, frosted cake (refrigerated at least 30 min)
- A palette knife or small offset spatula (amazon has a large selection)
- Buttercream in several colors (soft, spreadable consistency)
- A flat surface for practice (optional: parchment paper or nonslip baking mat
- Cake turn table
Let’s Begin! A recap of our tutorial.
Step 1: Prepare Your Base
Start with a smooth, chilled buttercream cake — cold buttercream helps petal strokes hold their shape.
Step 2: Tint Your Colors
Use gel food coloring to create your palette. Choose 2–4 complementary colors (florals, pastels, greens, etc.).
Step 3: Load Your Knife
Scoop a small amount of colored buttercream onto the flat side of your palette knife — don’t overload
Step 4: Press & Swipe
Gently press the knife to the cake’s surface and pull in the direction you want the petal or shape to form. Vary the pressure and angle for texture. Play around with different palette knives to create different styles of petals
Step 5: Layer & Blend
Add more strokes on top with other colors to create depth, shading, and movement — like painting on a canvas! When doing a second layer of petals over the first layer, chill your cake for about 10 minutes to let your buttercream harden, making it easier to go over them with another petal
Step 6: Add Details
Finish with piped flower centers, leaves, or dots. You can also use a small brush or toothpick to swirl or define edges.
Pro Tip:
Practice your strokes on parchment paper first to perfect your pressure and angles before decorating the cake.

Bake & Bloom Tip of the Month
“Let Spices Bloom for Better Flavor”
For richer spice flavor in your fall cakes, warm your ground cinnamon, nutmeg, or cloves in your butter or oil for 1–2 minutes before mixing. This helps “bloom” the spices—releasing their natural oils for deeper, toastier flavor in every bite!
As the warm days of July settle in, I’ve found so much joy in creating this month’s garden-inspired bakes. There’s something magical about soft florals, fresh flavors, and the quiet beauty of summertime.
Whether you’re celebrating something special or simply treating yourself, I hope these sweet creations bring a smile to your face. Thank you, as always, for supporting my small business and sharing in the love of cake and creativity.
Warmly,
Kerry
