There's Never Been a Better Time
to Be a Homesteader!
Because droves of new people flocked to homesteading in 2020…it was hard to find chicks to buy and canning jars were in short supply due to the increased demand. A pandemic has a way of giving you a much different perspective, right? Growing even some of your own food is a very good idea always, but even more so in unprecedented times like this.
Because of the renewed interest in homesteading skills, there’s also a bunch of new folks around here, so I thought I’d take a moment to (re)introduce myself…it’s been a while since I’ve done that…I promise to make it brief.
My name is Kerrie and I have a slight (well, maybe more than slight) backyard chicken and heirloom bean addiction.
- I started City Girl Farming around 12 years ago, back when I was living in a suburb of Portland, Oregon. Now I live just a bit further out on a 38-acre farm (which means more space for chickens!)
- Aside from a very spoiled flock of 21, I love spending time out in the garden. While I like to grow many things, one particular love is heirloom beans (the artist in me is smitten with the colors and variety).
- As a kid, I helped my mom with the home canning (back when I thought everyone learned how to do that). This past year, I’ve been experimenting a bit with freeze-drying, which has been a blast.
- When I’m not busy with homesteading tasks, you’ll most likely find me painting. Being an artist (and teacher of art) is how I support homesteading lifestyle. (If you haven’t checked out my online store, you can find it here--of course, it’s got lots of chicken and farm-related offerings!)
- Art and homesteading are really the two halves of my whole. Plus, my tuxedo cat that has me wrapped around his paw (he shows up often in my work as well—paint what you love, right?)
Now, how about you?
I’d love to hear more about you…are you homesteading or dreaming of moving to the farm but still in the city? Do you have chickens (or goats, cows, pigs, etc.) or still in the planning stages? What about gardening and preserving your own food?
I’d also love to know what you’d like to learn more about. I always want to produce relevant and helpful content for you.
One last thing—any artists out there?
Reply to this email and I’ll get it. I read every single email that hits my inbox from this list!
