Issue # 05 \\ Revolution or just Quirky

Jul 19, 2020 5:01 pm

Hey Friends,

Thanks to everyone who completed the survey about passwords I shared in my last email. The results were interesting, although in line with what I expected. I will be sharing some thoughts and advice this week, but for now here are the key take aways.

  • 96% of people say they have reused a password on multiple sites
  • 60% (+) of people either remember or write down their password
  • 50% (+) of people simply add something to the end of an old password when resetting.

From the results, it's clear that password recycling (reusing passwords) is common and poses the biggest risk. The main factor contributing to this behaviour, I believe, is that many of us try to manage our passwords ourselves, which ultimately limits the number we use (can remember). Thankfully, this is easily rectified and my recommendations this week will address this issue (watch out for the article on my website).

Last week I shared a pdf (download it here) which introduced 'Digital Balance' the new philosophy I propose. A new approach to using technology which encourages us to refine our digital interactions so they continue to support the goals and activities we want to pursue, but minimises our exposure to risk and unhealthy relationships with technology.

This week we will continue to explore part of this philosophy, the Protect strategy (see pdf) and will consider web browsers. I have again created a short survey (less than 60 seconds) to find out how everyone currently browses the internet on their phones or computers. Again, please answer honestly, and state what you actually do, not what you think you should do. As always, no personal information will be collected or shared.

That's all for now. If you have time, check out some of the other things I found interesting this week.

Have a great week!

Stay balanced.

Chris

Things I've found interesting this week

\\ One Article The UK government have moved to ban Huawei 5G kit due to security fears. Could impact the roll out of 5G in the UK, which might not be a bad thing, if it allows more extensive safety testing to be carried out.

\\ Two Article Related to the first article. If you've recently bought a 5G ready Huawei phone don't worry, it will continue to work as normal. However, I think it might be advisable to consider a different brand when next upgrading.

Favourite Quote

Revolution is a term that people use only when you're successful. Before that, you're just a quirky person who does things differently - Derek Sivers

I recently finished Derek's book: Anything you Want (i will share my book notes shortly) where the above quote is taken. My aim with this mailing list is to challenge us to rethink how we can use technology better. I'm not sure it's quite a revolution, so I guess I will stick with being considered quirky!
