Hi ,
Around here, the school year is wrapping up and you can feel summer is just around the corner. If you're like me, there's always a lot to look forward to with summer, including a little break from the structure that comes from the rest of the year. (Whether it's from you or your kids in school!)
But with the Kickstarter for Awakening having just ended and now its fulfillment to run, plus multiple other events on the horizon, this summer is shaping up to be a little busier than usual. What about you? Hopefully, your summer provides space to step back and enjoy a little extra time outside or simply doing the things you love!
Can I try something new?
Alright, I'd like to experiment a bit with this newsletter, if you'll humor me. One of the bonuses Awakening's Kickstarter backers unlocked was access to a brand new novella set between it and The Cataclysm. While the plan is to launch this story on retailers later this year, I thought maybe you'd like a peek as I'm working through it. Below is an unedited excerpt from A Legacy of Ashes, the next novella in The Oathsworn Chronicles series, and one I'm personally very excited for!
So enjoy and please let me know if you'd be interested in more snippets of my writing in future emails. 😊
From A Legacy of Ashes, Chapter One: Price of Survival
The high gate groaned, opening inward as a guard stepped out into the flickering light of the sconces. The Ordan insignia, a phoenix spread before a rising sun, gleamed on his polished chest plate. Esta froze, the same instinct kicking in that she felt every time a guard appeared. The one telling her to run.
“The lord’s occupied with his guests tonight. No admittance,” said the man irritably, narrowing his brows at Rivan from under his steel helm. “Move on, street rat.”
Rivan shook his head, trying to appear collected. “Apologies, sir. You see, we’re here on business with Lord Gann. Our presence was requested.” Rivan pulled a partially crumpled paper from his pocket. The guard snatched it from his hand, scowling as he read. After a moment, he turned the glare back at Rivan.
“Hmph. Another of his special guests, then. Follow me.”
The guard motioned them into the courtyard, shutting the gate with a firm click. Esta shivered, this time not from the cold, but from that feeling. Like being trapped with no escape.
