Important Tips for Navigating Car Accidents and Insurance Claims
Aug 20, 2024 4:03 am
Hi ,
I recently assisted a client who was involved in a car accident. Her car was rear-ended by a taxi, and while she was thankfully unharmed, she was unsure of what steps to take after the accident, despite feeling that she wasn’t at fault.
This experience highlighted some common questions and concerns many
drivers have when it comes to car accidents and insurance claims.
To help you be better prepared, I’ve compiled answers to a few frequently asked questions:
Commonly Asked Questions:
1. What should I do if the other driver offers to compensate me on the spot?
Even if you agree to a private settlement, it’s still important to report the incident to your insurer for record purposes. This ensures your side of the story is documented in case the other driver later claims against your insurance.
2. What if the other driver refuses to give their details or stops me from taking photos?
If the other driver is uncooperative, take down their vehicle registration number and report the accident to your insurer.
3. What if the accident involves a foreign vehicle and the driver refuses to exchange details?
For accidents involving foreign vehicles, such as a Malaysian-registered car, it’s crucial to note the vehicle registration number and file a police report.
4. Do I need to use an authorized workshop even if I’m not at fault?
Some insurers require you to use their authorized workshops, regardless of fault. It’s best to review your policy to understand these requirements.
5. Does the 24-hour accident reporting rule apply on weekends?
If an accident occurs on a Saturday night, the next working day (Monday) is considered the deadline for reporting.
