THE KNOSK 9TH HACKATHON: CIVIC SOLUTION HACKATHON

On April 6th, 2023, KNOSK N100-a-Day School hosted its termly hackathon and prize-giving day, which marked the end of the second term of the 2022/2023 academic session. JSS1 and JSS2 students finally presented their solutions after weeks of brainstorming and problem-solving on civic and societal problems they were tasked with during the term.

The event was attended by esteemed dignitaries from the FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), the Secondary Education Board, and the Federal Ministry of Education. The highlight of the day was the presence of Anissa Moses-Saromi, a 13-year-old author, speaker, and convener of the You Can Be More Initiative. She marked and celebrated her birthday with the children of the KNOSK School, sharing inspiring words of experience and hope with them.

Overall, it was a memorable day filled with great accomplishments and inspiring words from remarkable individuals.

TERMLY STAFF TRAINING/WORKSHOP

This year has been an incredible year for KNOSK N100-a-day school. Thanks to the generous support of the MacArthur Foundation, we were able to provide our staff with termly workshops and training on safeguarding, lesson planning, and effective lesson delivery. Our school is committed to providing quality education to our students, and these workshops have been instrumental in helping us achieve that goal.

On April 28th and 29th 2023, we held our second termly workshop, and it was another resounding success. The workshop covered a wide range of topics, including classroom management, curriculum development, and technology integration. Our staff was fortunate to learn from renowned experts in the field, who shared their knowledge and experience with us.

At the end of the training, our staff and teachers were buzzing with excitement. They were eager to put into practice the skills and techniques they had learned, and we are confident that this will lead to even better outcomes for our students. We are grateful to the MacArthur Foundation for their continued support and look forward to even more opportunities for growth and development in the future.

WE ARE BACK TO SCHOOL

What does back to school look like for low-income kids?

Yes, for many of them, holidays were a period of extended time working on the farms, doing long treks with produce from the farm and back home. And for some, it's a season of not enough food. Some families do 001. Some do 101.

As a part of the preparation for the return of students. To make the students feel welcome, teachers wear happy school t-shirts and sneakers. The school pantry needs to be stocked with food items such as rice, yam, spaghetti, beans, cooking oil, tomato paste, eggs, beef, and fish. Teachers are trained before resumption and workbooks are produced on a termly basis.

Currently, the school is seeking donations of food items or cash to purchase them, as well as financial support to purchase workbooks.

To support, donations can be made to GTBank, YDI-KNOSK Project, 0482821015. Need to talk to us, please call 08090459999, 09033338510

WHY ARE WE DOING PROJECT 9'90?

Have you heard about our ongoing campaign "Project 9"90"? Here's why we are having Project 9"90.

We are in our fourth school year since the inception of KNOSK School in September 2019. Over these four sessions, we have grown from 30 to 107 students, overstretching our current building from being just a simple 5-bedroom duplex and adding 7 additional rooms to accommodate all our learners.

This current facility also houses our ICT lab, science lab, workshop, library, and sickbay, along with 7 classrooms. There is barely enough room to accommodate the number of teachers we have.

For every 30 children we admit each year, we are unable to admit an average of 70 children from low-income families due to lack of space. There are 20.4 million out-of-school children, we would like to take in a minimum of 100 children every school year.

We've also seen cases of children who came to take our entrance exams but couldn't read or write even after finishing primary school. We would like to set up a literacy center and program for children like this in Kuje. These kids are from the poorest families, so they will not be able to afford any intervention going forward. This already excludes them from future opportunities.

As of today, UNICEF records that 75% of Nigerian children aged 14 and below are unable to read. We want to do something about that.

Finally, we want to set up a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) center where these children can get solid livelihood skills as part of their mainstream education. After graduation, we want them to be financially independent, whether or not they advance to the university.

For this reason, we have set out to raise funds to build nine (9) classrooms in 90 days.
