I think it’s safe to say that nowadays, there is an infinite supply of distractions. This poem by Mary Oliver invites us to listen, to pay attention, to become aware of things that we often take for granted. If we pause, just for an instant, for something as inconsequential as a couple of birds singing, we may discover unexpected joy.
Invitation
by Mary OIiver
Oh do you have time
to linger
for just a little while
out of your busy
and very important day
for the goldfinches
that have gathered
in a field of thistles
for a musical battle,
to see who can sing
the highest note,
or the lowest,
or the most expressive of mirth,
or the most tender?
Their strong, blunt beaks
drink the air
as they strive
melodiously
not for your sake
and not for mine
and not for the sake of winning
but for sheer delight and gratitude
believe us, they say,
it is a serious thing
just to be alive
on this fresh morning
in the broken world.
I beg of you,
do not walk by
without pausing
to attend to this
rather ridiculous performance.
It could mean something.
It could mean everything.
Mary Oliver (1935 – 2019) was an American poet. Her work is inspired by nature, stemming from her lifelong passion for solitary walks in the wild. She expresses a sincere wonderment. You can see her complete list of works here: Poems and Prose by Mary Oliver
We're big fans of Oliver's work. Stuart reads Oliver's poem Don't Hesitate posted here in the Elixir Community.
