Is it better travelling with young kids or older kids?

Hi there.

We have travelled with our kids from 10 months old to 18 years old. We started when we boarded a plane with our 10-month-old daughter and headed to Europe.

That was in 2005. Being from Australia, most of our flights have been long-haul. We know a thing or two about travelling with kids.

So, was it easier when the kids were little or better when they were older? Both age groups have advantages and disadvantages.

It's time to follow Wyld Family Travel on Threads and YouTube.

Pros of little kids

  1. It's Cheaper: Kids eat smaller meals, get into attractions for free and fit into smaller hotel rooms.
  2. Flexibility in Planning: With fewer opinions and preferences, planning your itinerary can be more flexible, allowing you to adapt on the go.
  3. Easier Entertainment: Small children often find joy in simple things, making it easier to entertain them.

Cons of little kids

  1. You need to pack more: Traveling with toddlers involves more gear and planning, from strollers to diaper bags.
  2. Naptime Struggles: The need for regular naps can impact your daily plans, making it essential to plan activities around nap time. Sometimes, you can get away with naps in strollers.
  3. Limited Activities: Some travel experiences might be limited due to the age and size of your little ones.

Pros of travelling with teens.

  1. Engaging Conversations: Teens can engage in meaningful conversations, offering a chance for deeper connections during their travels.
  2. More Choices: With more interests and preferences, you can explore various activities and attractions suited to teenagers and adults.
  3. Independence: Teens can handle more responsibilities. They can stay in hotels, get food by themselves, and more.

Cons of travelling with teens

  1. Tech Battles: The allure of smartphones and gadgets might compete with your carefully planned itinerary.
  2. They have an opinion: Teens might express disinterest in certain family activities, requiring compromise and negotiation.
  3. Costs: As they age, they will want their own rooms, eat adult-sized meals, and pay adult entry fees to attractions.

As we have shown above, both have pros and cons. We loved travelling with our kids when they were younger. The look of excitement and wonder in their eyes was something I will never forget.
