Travel Anxiety is real

Hi there,

With our trip to China only a few days away, worry is starting to set in for me. For as long as I can remember, travel has made me nervous and excited in equal amounts. Something is to be said about the comfort of familiarity, knowing your surroundings, and knowing what to expect from your day.

Travel makes you step out of your comfort zone and into the unknown, which can cause travel anxiety for many, including myself. I’m sure this is why many people don’t travel and have no desire to travel. Wanderlust anxiety is characterised by apprehension, fear, and unease about the upcoming trip.

Some people are scared of going somewhere where they can’t speak the language, don’t know what their hotel is like, etc. It’s easier to stay home and do what you do every day because that’s comfortable for many people.

How the anxiety of travel affects me!

Over the years, I’ve slowly gotten better at dealing with my travel anxiety. Travel anxiety manifests itself in many different ways for different people. As we know, no two people are the same. Some of my traits of travel anxiety over the years have been:

  • I pull the car over on the way to the airport to check if we’ve got the passports, knowing very well that the last thing I did before closing the door at home was check that they were in my bag.
  • Being at the airport a minimum of three hours before our departure because, as you know, there could be a cyclone or a massive sinkhole on the way that could cause us to miss our flights!
  • I weigh my luggage every day for a week before departure to ensure an extra two kilos haven’t stowed away in my bag, thus putting me over the weight limit!

So yes, even seasoned travellers like myself suffer from this; the most important thing is that travel anxiety does not stop you from travelling.

Travel Product of the Week!

I am looking forward to trying out this Multifunctional Accessory for Flying Tuesday. It seems to make sense as a phone and cup holder. I do not know about you, but I hate having my meal tray down if I do not have to, so if I can sit with cups of coffee and drinks in this, it will be a win!
