Winter bathing: is cold water the secret to Danish happiness?

Dec 10, 2021 3:01 pm

Hello!

We're now finished with Season Two of What The Denmark(!)

We hope you've enjoyed it - we're finishing off with a timely episode: all about why, in the middle of winter, people in Denmark go outside, strip off and take a plunge into near freezing water.

Why winter bathe

It turns out that winter bathing has all sorts of medical benefits.

You may be vaguely aware of the benefits of going in cold water, but in this episode we go deep into why that is, and also hear from people at the forefront of the Danish winter bathing "scene"

We were joined in the studio for this episode by journalist Saskia Weneit.

Saskia spoke to many experts and enthusiasts in researching this topic, including:

What we speak about in the episode

The dynamic of this one was quite fun.

Myself and Saskia both enjoy winter bathing and Josefine is... sceptical... at best.

We cover lots of interesting aspects of winter bathing such as:

  • What it actually is
  • The physical health benefits of winter bathing
  • The mental health benefits of winter bathing
  • The history of winter bathing in Denmark
  • How it has entered local politics
  • How you can get started
  • How to winter bathe safely

as well as (unsuccessfully) trying to convince Josefine to take the plunge.

Thanks to ECO Hotels for hosting us at Guldsmeden Hotel in Copenhagen.
