Wise Owl Wednesday #34 - Small Actions, Big results

This week we are taking a break from long-form writing and focusing more on what comedian Kevin Hart likes to call "little bite sized nuggets" of thought.
Sometimes all it takes is a "little nugget" to dramatically change someone's life.
In the age of social media, we are prone to falling victim to wanting big numbers. Lots of likes, thousands of followers, etc.
Today I want to chat about a few areas where small actions can leave big results.

Wisdom Thought of the Week: Words have Power
Words have power.
A short phrase that means nothing when said, can mean everything when heard.
When a Doctor has to inform family members that their loved one passed away, those words mean far less to the Doctor than they do to the family.
So be intentional with what to say.
Compliment people in an authentic way.
Hold your tongue when you want to lash out at someone.
Or, as a close friend of mine loves to say - "Just don't be an asshole."
Health Thought of the Week: The 3 Friends
I often reread books that have impacted me in some way. I do this because over time I grow as a person and can learn new concepts or insights from a book.
Reading a book when you're 30-years-old is a fundamentally different experience then reading that same book when you're 20-years-old.
I've been rereading The Compound Effect by Dan Hardy, and I was reminded of a powerful story. I will briefly recap the gist of the story for you here.
There are 3 friends.
Friend 1 wakes up one day and decides she wants to improve herself.
- She goes for 30-minute walks every day
- She eats 200 fewer calories each day
- She spends 30-minutes reading every evening
Friend 2 stays the same.
Friend 3 wants to enjoy life and be comfortable
- He rarely exercises
- He eats 200 calories more each day
- He watches a few hours of Netflix each night
For the first 6-months there is almost no difference between friends 1, 2, and 3.
This is the kicker of the story - at the 12-18 month mark we start to see larger and larger differences.
Results:
- Friend 1 loses thirty pounds over the course of two years
- Friend 2 stays the same and goes nowhere
- Friend 3 gains thirty pounds!
The point - small actions have a ripple effect the longer you do them whether they are healthy or unhealthy. This applies to wisdom, health, and wealth.
Wealth Thought of the Week: 1,000 True Fans
Rarely do essays become popular in this day an age. TikToks, YouTube videos, and short articles are the name of the game.
But every once in a while an essay or long form article shows up that transcends the norms of the internet.
1,000 true fans by Kevin Kelly is one such essay.
It talks about the concept of only needing 1,000 true fans to become successful as a creator. A "true" fan is defined as someone that will buy anything that you produce.
With 1,000 true fans, you can create a sustainable, comfortable life for yourself depending on how much value you provide to your 1,000 fans each year.
With 1,000 true fans you need to earn on average $100 a year from each of them to earn $100,000 a year. That's a solid income for most people.
This is powerful for me because success feels daunting sometimes, especially for people that are afraid of failure.
The point - success is not that far away. If you are a person that makes things or that gets things done, you only need to cultivate 1,000 true finds to create sustainable success.
Every true fan beyond that is a huge bonus.
