An alternative to being confident

Aug 21, 2021 7:31 pm

Hi, fellow thinker! 👋

Samuele here. I am writing this issue from Lisbon.

Yes, traveling around is a mess with all the current regulations. I hope a bit of rationality will strike back soon.

In the meantime, the best vengeance is a good life. So here I am in Portugal.

Also, in the past 2 weeks, I’ve gone back to focus on Twitter. I’ve been tweeting on average +15 times a day. The platform is full of creators, so I love the vibe and the interactions.

I talked about it with Alberto. We agreed to focus on it to expand the audience of We Who Think.

Finally, I’ve been collecting a bunch of interesting articles. Below I share with you my favorites.

Acting on Advice with Starting Principles: How to turn great advice into action

Integrating all our knowledge in a rational framework, it’s hard. And many don’t even try. Which is super scary!

I assume you do want a rational framework. And in that case, start by defining first principles (or starting principles as Julian Shapiro calls them).

How to Prioritize Long-Term Thinking

Of course, short-termism is bad, but how do you stay focused on the long-term?

“The only thing you need is to adjust your expectations. That will not only help you to appreciate the present more, it will also make you more patient. Ultimately, that’s what this concept comes down to.”

Believing In Yourself is Overrated. This is Better.

Confidence does matter. But what if it doesn’t come naturally to you? Or what if you’re trying something in which you have zero experience?

”As crazy as it sounds, you don’t need to believe in yourself. That’s not what’s holding you back. Whether you think you can do something is so much less important than whether you actually can or can’t do that thing. You need to assemble a case that proves you can. You need to do the work that stands as evidence for what you’re capable of.

So you can walk by sight, not by faith.”

🙏 Thank you for reading this issue of the newsletter.

I hope you will have a great weekend!

And if you’re in Lisbon these days, let me know (here or on Twitter. I would love to meet other thinkers!

Bye,

Samuele
