10 tips for eating out after bariatric surgery

Hi there,
This is a celebration and party season. I hope you had a calm and peaceful Christmas time! ✨ Nothing is over, celebrations continue!
When considering weight loss surgery people are often concerned about how they will dine out after the surgery - will they be able to sit at one table with others with no restrictions?
Here are the 10 tips worth to consider and learn for comfortable dining out after your weight loss surgery:
- If it is possible, choose the dining place – choose the place with healthy, nutritious meal options you feel comfortable with.
- View the menu online prior, so you are prepared to order a healthy meal option.
- Be creative and think of your individual needs without feeling any pressure from others around you – order from appetisers, just salad or customise the restaurant’s options or order a meal option and a doggy bag to take a part of it with you afterwards.
- Stay hydrated before the meal – sip water 30 minutes before your meal, that will make you ready for your meal without drinking and eating together, and will help you avoid confusing thirst for hunger.
- Order you first. There are studies about ‘social facilitation’ effect – that people tend to eat more in the presence of others, especially with friends or relatives. Socialising can distract you from realising that you’re satisfied. So, stick to your plan and avoid ordering more or unhealthy options.
- What to order? Remember – protein is your number one after bariatric surgery! So – chicken, beef, fish, seafood, eggs, tofu and similar. Healthy cooking style – grilled, steamed, roasted, broiled or baked in the oven.
- Do not compare plates!!! You should not compare what everyone else eats to what you are eating. Remember your stomach size is much smaller than others and you have your own eating patterns.
- Enjoy the company! This is not about food, but about socialising, being with friends or family. Take time to talk and this will help you to slow down with eating.
- Stop at the first signs of fullness. It takes around 20 minutes to our brain to receive a signal of fullness, so be mindful, do not lose sensation and control!
- Avoid alcohol – these are extra calories and alcohol can distract your attention and you might lose control over eating and drinking.
After the celebrations remember to get back to your daily balanced reasonable size meals!
Seasonal greetings!
May 2024 brings you joy, health, willpower, love and prosperity! ✨🥳
