Did you know that Irish patients may be able to claim back the cost of bariatric surgery through the EU Cross-Border Healthcare Directive?

Here is a simple step-by-step guide:

1. Eligibility

• You must be ordinarily resident in Ireland and eligible for public healthcare through the HSE.
• Your BMI is >40 or >35 and you suffer from obesity related health issues.

2. Referral before the surgery

• Ask your GP or consultant for a referral letter confirming your BMI, medical conditions and the need for treatment.
• If you are on the public waiting list already, a letter confirming the fact suits as well (or a referral from your GP to the public bariatric hospital)

3. Your treatment provider

Weight Loss Latvia provides bariatric surgery in a certified EU hospital in Latvia - Sigulda Hospital, which is officially recognised to provide medical services to Irish patients.

4. Pay for the surgery privately

Under the Cross-Border Directive, patients must pay for treatment first.

5. Documents

We will prepare all the documents for you. You will need invoices, proof of payment, medical reports, referral letter, flight confirmation documents and the HSE application form.

6. Submit your claim to the HSE

After returning to Ireland, you will apply to the HSE for reimbursement of the eligible hospital costs (currently you can claim back 3500 EUR from the total invoice of EUR 4990).

7. Receive reimbursement

The HSE will assess your application and reimburse costs in line with Irish public healthcare rates and rules (~2 months).
