Here is a recap of our message from this weekend...

Father's Day at One City: The Reversal

image

We had a previous section of last week's message in the recap! Here's the updated version! In this Father’s Day message titled “The Reversal,” Pastor Jared walks through the story of the Prodigal Son, not just from the lens of the son, but from the heart of the father. He challenges us to confront cycles, lead spiritually, and be the first to go first in love and forgiveness. It’s a call to reframe our family legacies through faith, not dysfunction.

Weekly Bible Study List

  1. Luke 15:20 (NLT) – “Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.”
  2. Genesis 50:20 (NLT) – “You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good.”
  3. Joshua 24:15 (NLT) – “But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
  4. Romans 5:8 (NLT) – “But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”
  5. Luke 15:24 (NLT) – “For this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.”

The Sunday Outline & Notes

Pastor Jared opens with a personal driving story to illustrate how sometimes the most courageous move is to turn around. Using this metaphor, he introduces the heart of the message: real transformation starts when we stop, admit we’ve been going the wrong way, and choose to reverse course.

The Prodigal Son: A Scandalous Reversal

Exploring Luke 15 through the lens of the father, we see the cultural shock of a man running to embrace a disgraced son. In a society that valued honor, this father’s love defied tradition. Jesus flips expectations by portraying God as a Father who runs toward shame to restore, not reject.

3 Ways to Reverse Generational Curses

Point 1: Break the Family Cycles

Pastor Jared dives into the generational impact of unresolved dysfunction, addiction, silence, shame, and more. Using the story of Joseph in Genesis 50, he emphasizes that the healing of a family can start with one person deciding, “This ends with me.” What you don’t confront, you’ll end up transferring. And breaking cycles begins with honesty, counseling, community, and a decision to obey God.

Point 2: Build the Family Altar – Lead Spiritually, Not Just Practically

Pastor challenges family leaders not just to provide, but to pastor their homes. Your family doesn’t just need more furniture, it needs faith. He explains that if we don't spiritually lead our homes, something else will. Referencing Joshua 24:15, he calls parents to prioritize God above all and let faith shape their family’s identity.

Point 3: Be First to Go First

Forgiveness is hard...but grace starts with those who go first. Pastor shares a heartfelt testimony about losing his own father, reminding us how fleeting life is. He urges listeners to choose forgiveness not because others deserve it, but because Jesus gave it first. Romans 5:8 reminds us: Christ loved us before we were lovable. Likewise, we’re called to love first, reach first, and forgive first.

From Sermon to Action

Pastor Jared closes with a vivid analogy of a cracked photo frame. Sometimes the story isn’t the problem, it’s the way we’ve been looking at it. He calls the church to reframe their lives through Jesus, not through shame or regret. The past doesn’t need a rewrite, it needs a reversal.
