Today's e-mail dives into the key distinctions between covenant and contract in our relationship with God. Highlighting the transformative power of commitment and courage, last week's sermon underlined the importance of actively living out our faith through contributions to God's kingdom, encouraging our One City members to embrace their value and significance in God's eyes.
Understanding Our Relationship: Covenant vs Contract
Recap: "Do I Matter?"
Last week's sermon centered around the universal query, "Do I Matter?". We delved into our worth in God's eyes, highlighting our relationship with God as a covenant - enduring, bound by mutual commitment, and not contingent on our performance. Understanding this enduring covenant underlines our irreplaceable role in God's kingdom, motivating us towards purposeful living.
Weekly Bible Study List
- Genesis 12:1-2 - The incident where the LORD initiated a covenant with Abram, promising him a legacy of a great nation.
- Romans 4:3 - The scripture specifies, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." This underlines the importance of faith in establishing and maintaining our covenant with God.
- Genesis 22:2 - This verse depicts God's challenge to Abraham's faith using Isaac, emphasizing that our covenant with God involves trust amidst trials.
- Matthew 26:39 - The occurrence of Jesus's prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane shows the significance of Abraham's willingness to sacrifice Isaac.
God's Covenant with Abraham
The covenant between God and Abraham shows the depth of the covenant relationship. God's promise to Abraham was a never ending promise. This not only shaped a nation, but also established a blueprint for the faith and commitment anticipated in our covenant with Jesus.
Key Points about Covenant: Commitment, Courage, Contribution
- Understanding Commitment: Comprehending a covenant begins with the recognition of commitment. This commitment serves as the foundation of our covenant, requiring us to make a steadfast decision to honor our bond with God, mirroring His unwavering commitment to us.
- Embracing Courage: This commitment to honor our covenant is not a passive task—it calls for strength in the face of adversity. Courage, therefore, represents the bravery required to confront challenges and prioritize God's will. The account of Abraham's faith-driven departure from his home and his willingness to sacrifice Isaac stands as confirmation of this courage.
- Recognizing Contribution: Furthermore, a covenant necessitates contribution—the meaningful role we undertake in God's divine plan. This refers to the deployment of our unique gifts, resources and talents in service to grow God's kingdom. It's an acknowledgment that we each have a significant role in the overarching divine narrative.
Embodying Covenant: Extending God's Plan into Our Lives
Living the covenant shines a light on our role in God's design. Beyond understanding, it asks active application in our lives as we fulfill our callings, reach out to our communities, and spread God's word and love. Such actions strengthen our relationship with God as we step beyond comfort zones, demonstrating our faith in tangible ways.
From Sermon to Action
Honoring our covenant doesn't end on Sunday; it provokes a transformation and actions of daily faith. Volunteering, assisting those in need, or even spreading kindness are reflective of God's love and willingness. Let's apply and live the gospel, not just hear it. Our actions speak louder, exposing the essence of our covenant with God.
