Finishers: Obedience in the Fire

image

Sheesh. One City is OUT OF THIS WORLD right now. In Obedience in the Fire, Pastor Jared challenges us to live lives of bold obedience, even when culture pushes against it. Using 2 Peter 3:10–13, he paints a vivid picture of a church that must remain faithful amid cultural pressure, compromise, and spiritual apathy. Obedience isn’t optional—it’s a calling that demands courage, intentionality, and holiness. The fire is coming—but we are called to run into it, not away.

  4. 2 Peter 3:13 (NIV) – “We are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.”

The Sunday Outline & Notes

In the third week of the Finishers series, Pastor Jared preaches a powerful message titled "Obedience in the Fire." Drawing from 2 Peter 3:10–13, he lays out the urgency of remaining obedient, holy, and godly in a world that is quickly compromising truth for comfort.

The sermon opens with an illustration of firefighters—people who run into danger while others flee. This becomes a metaphor for the Christian life: we are called not to comfort, but to courage. As believers, we’re built different. We’re not trained to follow the crowd but to follow the call.

Peter asks a pivotal question: “Since everything will be destroyed, what kind of people ought you to be?” It’s a reminder that this world is temporary and our lives should reflect eternal values. Obedience is not about looking spiritual—it’s about living surrendered, especially in hard seasons.

Point 1: Obedience Will Challenge Culture

Obedience to God will always go against cultural norms. Peter calls believers to live holy and godly lives—not blending in, but standing out. Holiness, or "hagios" in the Greek, means to be set apart. Pastor Jared emphasizes that while holiness may not make you popular, it makes you powerful.

Point 2: Compromise Is Easily Normalized

Most people don’t wake up and decide to disobey—it happens subtly. Compromise is often dressed up in Christian language: bitterness becomes “boundaries,” lust becomes “love,” and greed becomes “hustle.” Peter warns us that what we normalize today becomes our standard tomorrow.

Point 3: Obedience Today Creates Blessing Tomorrow

True obedience isn’t reactive; it’s proactive and future-focused. It sets the course of our lives. Like GPS, obedience helps us arrive at the destination God designed. The reward for obedience is not just blessing here—but alignment with eternity.

From Sermon to Action

Pastor Jared provides 3 actionable steps to strengthen obedience:

In closing, Pastor Jared reminds us that obedience isn’t about perfection—it’s about pursuit. As the fire comes, we don’t retreat—we stand firm, anchored in holiness and empowered by God’s grace.
