Here is a recap of our message from this weekend...

May We Honor: You're In My Seat

Pastor Jared kicks off the new series, "May We Honor," by addressing the concept of humility and honor in the sermon titled "You're In My Seat." He discusses our culture's addiction to instant gratification and self-centeredness and how this can hinder our ability to honor and lift others.

The Dinner Party

Pastor set the context of the scripture which shows Jesus attending a Sabbath dinner at the house of a prominent Pharisee, where He's being closely watched. The Pharisees are not genuinely interested in Jesus' company but are looking for reasons to condemn Him. Jesus uses this setting to teach a valuable lesson.

Observing guests scrambling for the best seats, Jesus tells a parable highlighting the dangers of self-promotion. He warns that those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. Pastor Jared emphasizes that "Honor cannot be present absent of humility," urging us to pursue Godly honor rather than pride-filled honor.

Weekly Bible Study List

  1. Luke 14:7-11 (NIV): "When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor…For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."
  2. James 4:10 (NIV): "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up."
  3. Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV): "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves."

3 Lessons On Humility & Honor from Jesus

  1. Humiliation Seeks the Best Seat: The guests at the Sabbath dinner were driven by ego and wanted to be seen as important.Jesus warns of the potential embarrassment if the host asks them to move to a lower place. Humiliation is the result of prideful actions.
  2. Humility Waits to be Seated: Drawing on Andrew Murray's teachings, Pastor Jared explains that humility requires total dependence on God. Humility requires patience, while pride leads us to seek instant gratification. Jesus exemplified humility by giving up everything on earth for us to gain everything in Heaven.
  3. Honor Gives Up Their Seat: Jesus encourages His host to invite those who cannot repay him. True honor is not about being noticed but about serving those in need. God's honor is greater than worldly recognition and is marked by eternal peace and joy.

From Sermon to Action

Pastor Jared concludes by urging us to stop worrying about who's in our seat and to find those who need a seat at the table. He encourages humility, reminding us that "those who humble themselves will be exalted."
