Here is a recap of our message from this weekend...
Father's Day at One City: Man Up
Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers and positive male role models in our community! Pastor Jared opened up by expressing his dream of making a difference and leaving the world better for his children. He sets the stage for the sermon titled "Man Up," emphasizing that intentional action is crucial in turning dreams into reality, including becoming a man of God.
The Story of Caleb and Joshua
Drawing from Numbers 13, Jared recounts how Moses sent twelve men to explore the Promised Land. Ten of them returned with a fearful report, but Caleb and Joshua urged the Israelites to trust in God’s promise. This story serves as a backdrop for exploring what it means to "man up" as a follower of God. He goes on to describe the characteristics of a man of God and breaks it down into 3 specific characteristics.
Weekly Bible Study List
- Numbers 13:30: "Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, 'We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.'"
- Numbers 14:24: "But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it."
- Joshua 14:10-11: "Now then, just as the LORD promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old! I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then."
- Matthew 6:33: "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
- 1 Corinthians 11:1: "Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ."
3 Characteristics of a Man of God
1. A Man of God is Filled with God - Pastor Jared explains that Caleb had a "different spirit" because he was filled with the Holy Spirit. He compares this to two balloons: one filled with helium and one without, illustrating that it’s what's inside that makes the difference. Pastor challenged men to examine what fills them – the Holy Spirit or the weight of the world.
2. A Man of God Acts Like It - Caleb’s life reflected his faith in God not just through words, but through actions. Pastor spoke against the temptation for men to profess faith verbally but fail to live it out. He called for men to trust God more than the world, to act differently from non-believers, and to joyfully serve God and their families. Pastor stressed that being part of a church is a privilege, not an obligation.
3. A Man of God Receives Godly Honor - God rewards those who diligently seek Him. Matthew 6:33 to emphasizes that blessings come from prioritizing Godliness over manliness. Caleb, even at 85, was still ready to fight for God’s promises. Pastor encouraged the men of One City to face their giants with Godliness, promising that blessings follow those who trust and obey God.
From Sermon to Action
Pastor Jared concludes by calling men to follow Jesus wholeheartedly, to be godly leaders in their homes and communities. He challenged the congregation to respond to God’s call and to embody the characteristics of true men of God.
