There are so many types of mushrooms in the food store. Are certain ones better for Crohn's? Also, what's the best way to prepare them.
You’re right - shopping for mushrooms can feel overwhelming! There are so many to choose from. All have valuable nutrients, but they vary in taste and consistency. Based on consistency, crimini and white button are probably the softest for the GI tract.
One of the easiest, tastiest, and healthiest ways to prepare mushrooms is to sauté them in chicken or vegetable broth. I like this recipe for 7-minute “Healthy Sautéed” Crimini Mushrooms.
A few IBD-specific things to keep in mind regarding mushrooms:
- If following a low-fiber diet, then it’s best to avoid raw mushrooms.
- People at risk for a bowel obstruction (e.g. stricturing Crohn’s) should puree mushrooms.
- Mushrooms can cause lots of gas for some people (usually those with IBS).
- Those with thrush, recurring yeast infections or another yeast imbalance might want to limit or avoid mushrooms until they correct their imbalance.
