6 Tips for Reducing Bowel Urgency

A common concern among people with diarrhea is that they feel like food, particularly fried foods, greasy foods, red meat and high-fat dairy, “runs right through” them. Sometimes they’re running to the bathroom mid-meal.

Sound familiar? You might have your gastrocolic reflex to thank.

Vacuum Sealers and Bulk Cooking

Scott/Bertina: As much as we enjoy cooking, sometimes we don’t feel like spending a ton of time in the kitchen. That’s when we thank our past selves for cooking in bulk.

When we bulk cook, we use a vacuum sealer to store the leftovers before putting them in the freezer. This helps the food stay fresh and prevents freezer burn.

We often freeze leftover roasted chicken and chicken wings, but lately we’ve frozen fresh ginger so we don’t have to go out as much to buy more.

We’re in the market for a new one, and here’s one model we are considering.

Turkey Burgers for Memorial Day

Judging by the lack of beef at the grocery stores, lots of people are ready to cook some burgers for Memorial Day whereas others are scrambling for an alternative.

Fortunately for Scott and Bertina, they have a terrific non-beef burger recipe that’s perfect for Scott since he doesn’t eat beef — like others with Crohn’s, he feels like his gut is on overdrive after eating it.

These turkey burgers are yummy and will even satisfy the beef lovers.

Side note: Coconut aminos top the list of Bertina’s favorite ways to add flavor to dishes. It’s a great substitute for soy sauce.

What you need

  • 1 lb extra lean 99% ground turkey meat
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 onion minced
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon coconut aminos
  • 1-2 tablespoons olive oil

Make it

  1. In a large bowl, add the ground turkey meat, egg, onion, salt, pepper, garlic powder and coconut aminos.
  2. Mix gently with your hands until well combined.
  3. Make 4 patties by forming them into a circle with your hands.
  4. In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil on medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the patties. Cook for 5 minutes on each side.
  5. Serve on a bun (regular or gluten-free) or on top of soft lettuce (e.g. Bibb, Boston) with your favorite toppings.
