Introduction
Visiting Vietnam for business or pleasure?
For three days to three months?
This is how I recommend starting your day.
Background
Living in Vietnam from 2018 to 2023,I experienced an amazing and dynamic country, culture, people, and cuisine steeped in thousands of years of history.
I lived long-term in Da Nang, the up and coming digital nomad coastal beach city, as well as the emerging manufacturing and cosmopolitan city of Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon).
Every visitor to Vietnam is transformed by the country’s natural beauty, kind people, and chaotic synergies that are displayed in everyday interactions on the streets.
The country is undergoing an economic rise where the youth are confident, hopeful, and excited about its future and place in the world.
How to start your day
Vietnamese generally wake-up very early, about 4-5 am before the sun rises where you will see most locals playing badminton, practicing tai chi, riding their bicycle, or just taking a stroll.
After you wake-up, get a delicious and cheap street breakfast which can conveniently be found on nearly every corner block, side street or alley.
My two favorite breakfast choices were:
Banh mi sandwich (Vietnamese French baguette sandwich of cold meats, vegetables, and pate) and bo ne (sizzling platter of beef, egg, and pate served with a baguette).
Most of these meals are served early, about 6 am and run out a few hours in the morning.
After having breakfast, walk to your nearest local cafe and order a cafe sua da (sweetened condensed milk coffee).
Vietnamese enjoy their arabica strong brew with a hefty dose of sweetened condensed milk.
They are known to spend hours sipping a coffee or two, listening to music and scrolling their social media feeds.
Conclusion
The best way to start your day in Vietnam is by doing what the locals do and that includes getting street food breakfast followed by a strong, local coffee.
It’s one of the simplest pleasures and a ritual I enjoyed every morning.
