How My Family Immigrated from Vietnam to the US

Celebrating 50 years in America

image

Greetings everyone!

50 years!

Yes, that's right.

My family is celebrating our 50th anniversary in the US!

Two weekends ago, we retraced our roots back to the Shipley family farm in a rural town west of St. Louis, Missouri.

This is where my family landed after the fall of Saigon in 1975.

Dan and Sallie Shipley were the family that agreed to sponsor our family.

It was a trying time as my parents didn't know English, had no money or skills, and had hardly any connections to move up in society.

Despite these obstacles, our family was able to adapt to our surroundings, establish our lives in Mankato, Minnesota, attend the Catholic school system, and slowly save enough money to open an Asian grocery store and restaurant by the mid-1980s.

Here's the quick recap of our weekend visiting the Shipleys and our origin story in the US.

Hope you enjoy it!
