Happy Super Sunday !
Around one-third of Americans and one quarter of Canadians are expected to watch tonight's Super Bowl. Viewers in more than 130 other countries will also tune in, though in much smaller numbers.
Super snacking
“It takes focus, practice, a great player lineup and extra hustle to come through on game day,” Domino's press release.
In recent polls conducted by Frito Lay, 40% of Americans have admitted they plan on snacking more during this Super Bowl compared to last year.
- 12.5 million pizzas were consumed in America in 2020-- which is enough to cover more than 37,500 football fields.
- Salsa is the most popular dip in America
- People are expected to consume 1.42 billion chicken wings.
What else is on?
Since most eyes are on the big game, airing counter-programming isn't very lucrative. The most popular counter-program is the Puppy Bowl.
The Puppy Bowl features adoptable shelter dogs playing a modified game of football. The event has grown to include celebrity fans, a fantasy league, a kitty half-time show and an hour-long pregame show.
- This year's Puppy Bowl will be hosted by Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg
- The adoption rate for the event (filmed earlier this fall) was 100%--all participating animals have found loving homes.
- About 80 ounces (2,300 g) of peanut butter are used for the taping, along with 15 pounds (6.8 kg) of dry dog food, 500 doggie treats, and 250 toys.
Super Hangovers
Super Bowl Fever, Super Sick Monday and Super Bowl bug are just some of the names given to the traditional unproductive Monday following the Super Bowl. According to surveys, 10-12% of Americans call in sick following the Super Bowl, leading to some petitions to make the day a national holiday.
- Economists estimate that the US economy suffers about $4 billion in losses on Super Sick Monday.
- Surveys suggest 13-17 million people call in sick
- In 2017, Heinz started a petition to make the day a national holiday.
That's all for today! We are off to smash our avocados and dust off our football-shaped plates. Don't fret, we won't be taking Super Sick Monday off. We will be back tomorrow night with a brand new quiz.
Have a great week!
MJ and Jessica
