The tool most of us don't use enough...

Hey there !

The house down the street from me is under construction.

Over the winter new owners bought it...and then knocked it down so that they could start fresh.

As a result, there are a LOT of construction folks on my (normally quiet) street all day long right now.

And it got me thinking.

Right now, they're working on siding the house.

They're using ALL the tools as they work...hammers, saws, nails and a bunch more I probably can't name.

So now just imagine that all the workers got together this morning and decided that today they wouldn't use hammers.

That would be crazy, right?

How would they get the siding onto the house?

A hammer is an ESSENTIAL tool in a construction worker's tool belt.

It serves endless functions, and without it everything would take longer and be more complicated.

What's even crazier is that we business owners do exactly this - the equivalent of deciding not to use the hammer - every time don't evaluate our work.

Evaluation is to business growth as a hammer is to building a house.

It is a ESSENTIAL tool.

Evaluation serves endless functions, and without it everything takes longer and is more complicated.

So why in the world do we skip it?

Especially for those of us who were teachers and KNOW how to assess (which is exactly what evaluation is).

In my experience there are three big reasons:

  1. TIME
  2. HOW
  3. FEAR

We think we don't have time to evaluate.

We think we don't know HOW to evaluate.

And we're afraid of what we'll find when we do finally evaluate.

Sound familiar?

Probably ;) and you're not alone. I KNOW the power of evaluation and I fall into EXACTLY these same potholes.

But really, here's the truth of it.

Evaluation doesn't take a lot of time (think about how long it really took to assess a student...often you knew exactly what was going on in the first few minutes).

Evaluation doesn't take complicate frameworks, tools, or processes.

Evaluation actually REDUCES fear - because you KNOW what's going on.

AND it creates actual data for you to make decisions from.

Evaluation actually SAVES time.

It speeds growth.

And it helps you reach goals you didn't even know were possible.

Soooooo...

Today is a great day to do a little tiny bit of evaluation.

Here's how.

Sometime today set the timer for 10 minutes.

Get your notebook and answer these questions:

  1. What is WORKING in my life/business right now?
  2. How can I do MORE of what's working next week?

That's it.

(and look at you, evaluating! Hooray!)

Happy Friday to YOU!

Warmly,

Sara
